to Joseph Benzola... "Hey there Joe,
not sure about you, but I started off as a "home-taper, cassette underground" guy way back in the early 80's, so it's kind of appropriately odd to wind up somehow there again at the other end of it. Okay, hope you're well enough and just wanted to say that your new CD's a real earful buffet, and it's an honor for me to belly-up to that bar my friend. So work the work, don't lose the faith, and keep your ears attached to your hands just in case your muse is on the loose

Living Archive Sept 2010 now available blog from Don Campau
The September 2010 issue of The Living Archive Of Underground Music is now available.
After a month's hiatus that involved numerous computer issues and other delays, The Living Archive is back celebrating it's one year anniversary with all new content regarding Cassette Culture and underground music.
This month I am honored to bring you an interview with Hal McGee, one of the most important underground artists and creative forces of our time. This in depth piece may be the definitive interview with this essential and visionary artist.
I am also offering my own double tape set from 1987, "Pinata Party" as the Tape Of The Month with extensive notes about the making of this project and link to free download/streaming of the entire set.
There are also contributions by Jack Hertz who profiles Music From The Film ( a Baltimore area experimental group), Dan Susnara ( Chicago home taper) on meeting various home tapers, Pascal Dauzier ( of SJ Organisation and La Sonorite Jaune) in the Early Experiences section and much more.
As always, I welcome your comments and involvement with future issues of The Living Archive.
Hal McGee presents the HalTapes Cassette Catalog 1982-1991. 50 cassette albums available for $4 or $5 (depending on bias chosen). Besides Hal McGee, the catalog includes such artists as Viscera, Swamp Patrol, Dog As Master, If, Bwana, and Phinney/McGee.
Recorderman Overhead Drum Mic Technique youtube from Homemade Music
Here is a simple way to capture an entire drum kit with just two microphones as pioneered by the infamous "Recorderman." By using a string to align both the bass drum and snare in the very center of the stereo image, you will get a very solid center channel and reasonably balanced sound from the kit. You can also compliment this setup with close mikes for a more traditional sound.

Garageband.com Closing July 15th 2010 blog from Homemade Music
The people of garageband.com also run iLike.com and MySpace Music. They've decided to focus their efforts on social media applications in the latter two and close the garageband.com website:
After ten years of helping people discover independent music, Garageband.com will be retired on July 15th, 2010.
The landscape of how music is discovered and delivered has changed drastically over the last decade. We are proud to have been a part of that change -- first with Garageband.com and then with iLike.com, and today with MySpace. As part of the effort to deliver the best user experience, we're focusing our resources on MySpace and iLike, and retiring Garageband.
Link your account to iLike: (action required)
If you want to continue to make your music available for streaming or download on iLike.com and iLike's Music application on Facebook, please go to iLike.com and login with your Garageband username and password by July 15th, 2010. This will automatically link your account to iLike so we can port your music, profile photo, and biography to iLike.com.
We also recommend creating a music profile on MySpace if you have not done so, sign up, as iLike and MySpace are working closely together to deliver the next generation of tools and services for musicians and music fans alike.
Finally, if you have recently purchased Gold Membership or Contest Entry on Garageband.com and would like a refund, please email refunds@ilike-inc.com to request a refund. Valid refund requests must be received no later than August 31st, 2010.
